Albums of the year as chosen by users of the Fediverse - 1989

Well another request went out and you duly delivered. I once again asked people of the Fediverse to send me their favourite albums from a particular year, this time 1989, and I got a lot of good responses.

Firstly I’d like to say thank you to everyone who got involved by nominating an album and for sharing the posts. It’s great getting everybody talking about music they’re passionate about.

Secondly I’d just like to say what a good year 1989 was! So many good albums were nominated and mentioned but let’s get into the details.

This time round we do have a stand alone winner so the gold medal goes to Disintegration by The Cure. A fabulous record that truly deserves its flowers.

Unlike previous years there were no ties for the top spots and so the silver medal goes to The Real Thing by Faith No More.

It was a close run thing to get the bronze medal but it was achieved and the third place prize goes to Doolittle by Pixies.

Since there is also an outright candidate for fourth spot they might as well get a mention too. This goes to previous winners Nine Inch Nails with Pretty Hate Machine.

After this there were 4 albums that had the same amount of votes in 5th place. Those were:

Altars of Madness by Morbid Angel

Bizarro by The Wedding Present

Workbook by Bob Mould

3 Feet High & Rising by De La Soul

Another moment to stop and say “What a year!”. The remaining albums all also received at least one vote:

Gutter Ballet by Savatage

Headless Cross by Black Sabbath

…But Seriously by Phil Collins

When Dream and Day Unite by Dream Theatre

The Miracle by Queen

Technique by New Order

Thåström by Thåström

On Land and in the Sea by Cardiacs

Nothingface by Voivod

Rabies by Skinny Puppy

UAIOE by KMFDM

Straight Outta Compton by NWA

Tin Machine by Tin Machine

Cosmic Thing by The B52s

Follow the Blind by Blind Guardian

Hats by The Blue Nile

Start Today by Gorilla Biscuits

Rhythm Nation by Janet Jackson

No Control by Bad Religion

Pump by Aerosmith

Paul’s Boutique by Beastie Boys

Symphonies of Sickness by Carcass

Fear of Music by Talking Heads

Think This by Toxik

Streetcleaner by Godflesh

Monsters by Meat Puppets

13 Songs by Fugazi

11 by Smithereens

Quick shoutout to Paul’s Boutique by the Beastie Boys. Although it only received one vote for album of the year, it did get multiple shout outs in the honourable mentions that people listed. So that’s the year that was. What one shall we do next?

Hails!
