My favourite albums of every year I’ve been alive - 1991

As you may or may not have been aware, I do another series of posts on this blog in which I ask users of the Fediverse for their favourite album from a particular year and tally up the results. This time out it coincided nicely with this series of posts, as they both focus on 1991.

Now in 1991 I was the lofty age of 1. I like to think I’m cool but unfortunately I wasn’t listening to any of these records back then. They’re all stuff I’ve obviously came to love and appreciate later in life. So here are the albums from 1991 that I really like or have formed some sort of connection to over the years.

This is the second in the series, being born in 1990, though it was undoubtedly a strong year with great albums, there are less on my list this time out. Sure Nevermind by Nirvana and Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden are classics, but they’re not albums that have ever resonated with me all that much personally. What we do have is a heavier list which is almost all in the death metal camp. So let’s get started.

First up is Human by Death. Death are one of my all time favourite bands along with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. They are, in my opinion, the best extreme metal band to ever do it. Human might be my favourite album of theirs. It’s a toss up between this and Symbolic but only one of them was released in 1991 so here we are. Human by Death. One of my most treasured death metal albums.

As I said above, this particular year is mostly death metal and so next up is another bonafide classic. That is Like and Ever Flowing Stream by Dismember. There are other Dismember albums I like, though they never came close to hitting these highs again. This would be on most “Top death metal albums of all time” lists and with good reason.

What’s that you say? You want more death metal? No worries, I got you covered. Next up is Effigy of the Forgotten by Suffocation. The same applies here as above, except there are two Suffocation albums I love and a handful of others I enjoy. Great band. Great album.

Hometown heroes next. I’m sorry Beatles but Carcass are the best band to come from my city if you ask me. Necroticism isn’t their finest hour but it’s better than most bands finest hours and for that reason alone it deserves its place here.

Taking a break from the death metal for a while and next up is the debut studio album Gish by the Smashing Pumpkins. They were my favourite band for a while growing up and this is the album that made me want to learn to play the bass. It’ll alway be special to me for that reason.

Lastly we are getting heavy again with some death/thrash from Brazil. An important band for me since I accidentally downloaded some of their stuff on Limewire when looking for something else. I was hooked and wanted more! Important step in my metal journey.

So those are the albums that I consider my favourites or are important to me from 1991.
